Purpose of the Program
The aim of the Turkish Teaching Undergraduate Program is to train qualified Turkish language teachers who will work in middle schools with a contemporary educator profile that generally reflects upon and encourages reflection on language, possesses knowledge of the historical and cultural context of the Turkish language, shows interest in Turkish literature, uses and teaches Turkish in accordance with its rules, understandsindividual student needs, applies educational methods and techniques suitable for different learning styles, possesses effective communication skills,pursues professional development throughout their career, and embraces ethical values.
The Turkish Teaching Undergraduate Program consists of three main dimensions: subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge (teacher training),and general cultural knowledge. In the subject knowledge dimension, the program focuses on fundamental language skills (listening, reading, speaking, and writing), Turkish grammar, Old Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Literature, Folk Literature, children's and world literatures, literary theories, diction, linguistics, analysis of Turkish textbooks, and teaching Turkish as a foreign language. In the pedagogical knowledge dimension, the program covers educational activities such as introduction to education, instructional technologies, educational psychology, teaching principles and methods, special teaching methods, assessment and evaluation, material design, classroom and school management, counseling,special education, and more. Students' cultural aspects and personal development are supported through various mandatory and elective courses, while Field Experience and Teaching Practice courses enable them to gain practical experience in the field.
Graduates of the Turkish Teaching Undergraduate Program work as "Turkish Language Teacher" in both public and private middle schools under theMinistry of National Education. Additionally, they can pursue postgraduate education and become academics. They can also work as teachers in educational and cultural institutions abroad and Turkish studies centers worldwide, in both private and official capacities related to Turkicrepublics. Moreover, they can work as specialists in institutes, research centers, archives, museums, libraries, or as editors, editors-in-chief, and other roles in media and publishing organizations.
The Turkish Teaching Undergraduate Program, which admitted its first students in the 2010-2011 academic year, has a quota of 60 (±2) students. Each year, students are admitted based on the verbal (SÖZ) score type of the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) conducted by theStudent Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM). According to the Higher Education Input Indicators, the maximum score for the program in 2023 is 458.931, with a maximum ranking of 1,335. The score of the last student admitted with a coefficient of 0.12 is 408.452, and their ranking is 14,997.
Our main department has student and faculty mobility agreements under Erasmus+, the Turkic Council Turkish Universities Association - OrhunProcess, the Mevlana Exchange Program, and the Farabi Exchange Program. At the moment, our program does not provide opportunities for double majors or minors.
Students enrolled in our undergraduate program are subject to the "Ege University Regulations on Education and Training". Those wishing totransfer horizontally to our program and register as international or special students must meet the evaluation criteria determined by the university senate according to relevant guidelines. To graduate from the program, students must successfully complete all courses, fulfill the attendance requirements, accumulate a minimum of 240 ECTS credits, and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.00/4.00. The duration of the Turkish Teaching Undergraduate Program is 4 years. The language ofinstruction is Turkish.
